Intolerance

Why is there a sudden furore about intolerance? Should I say,Aamir Khan effect? In fact, most of the media, FB fraternity have become gung-ho over this. In a way, it displays patriotism. Hats off! Likewise, are we really being carried away by the words of some “XYZ”, with whom we bear no real connection? No doubt, intolerance is on the rise, both in India and across the world. Now, I am not going to delve into politics.

Lets look at some instances in our day-to-day life.

1.       Intolerance within the family:
How many of us are tolerant enough to live in a joint family? Obeying our elders is the toughest job. Feuds are the ordeal of the day. We are egoistic to acknowledge and reciprocate the feelings of self and others. We do not want to compromise our freedom.Increasing number of old age homes are a testimony for this. Crux- “Nobody(elders and youngsters ) should question our actions”.

2.       Intolerance within the community we live:
We have started attaching importance to materialistic possessions.
·         Fighting for the best place to park our vehicles.
·         Complaining about a drop of water spillage from neighbor’s balcony.
·         Not living in harmony with nature (no entry for pigeons, sparrows, etc).

3.       Intolerance on roads:
Are we patient enough......
·         For the signal to turn green?
·         To wait a few seconds without honking for vehicles ahead of us to move?
·         To give way for ambulances?

4.       Intolerance about the religion we follow:
I believe, all religions imbibe good values. Customs and traditions pertaining to any religion have been created with some specific purpose/ meaning. Our inability to comprehend nuances of our religion is leading to intolerance. Adhering to the principles of one’s own religion, will enlighten us and prevent us from treading on the wrong path.

Millions of Indians, leave their villages and come to cities, and or go abroad. They leave their cocoon in search of better education, better income, and better living standards and so on. How come, we never thought of it as intolerance?Intolerance, necessarily need not be violent. Even small acts of insensitive nature can be termed as intolerant.

                                                                       To be continued......
