Vacations, Now & Then..

Occasional Vacation or
Is Vacation an Occasion ? or
Is an Occasion a Vacation ??? ... Im confused.

Now-a-days, do children really enjoy their vacation?Do they long for the 2 month break?
The Mini-School time. They are ready 4 the whole range of new activities under the name of SUMMER CAMPS.Wake-up,eat and go for dance, music, painting, cricket coaching,story-telling, theater workshops, etc. Why are parents instrumental in enrolling their children to summer camps during the vacation? Aren't parents happy with the 10 month schooling?

Way back to my annual holidays(April-May)- nothing to read/write or worry about. No exams/tests/assignments to think of.Do whatever I wanted to do (AVK- Avuthu Vitta Kazhudai). As both my parents were employed,I used to visit my granny's house until I was 8 or 10 yrs.All my cousins would gather and have fun.As we (my brother & I), grew up , I spent my holidays in Ambattur(that's were I lived till my marriage).

A whole lot of friends. We spent our time playing hide-n-seek,cards,carom,ludo, badminton, volleyball, etc.Would go home only for lunch & dinner.Rest of the time I would stay in my neighbor's house.Sometimes, my cousin & I would go for 'HOUR-Cycle'.Rent a cycle for an hour or two & roam. I dunno if that concept still exists.

There used to be a houseful of my brother's friends playing TT & cricket.A small slipper stand was at our house entrance. Our dining table would be the TT table. Our snack box(called the akshyapathram) would be filled with snacks from my father's office.Mangoes, picked up directly & eaten from trees tasted all the more delicious.
Reading Enid Blyton,Famous Five/Secret Seven during holidays was enthralling. Not forgetting to mention the mouth-watering eatables (doughnuts, pies,cakes,juices,etc);-). I ve always wondered if I could spend my holidays in such an adventurous way.

Having spent my holidays in such happy ways, Im a bit concerned about the way children are made to spend their vacation. Can't we let them be on their own at least during holidays.I wish parents change their minds & provide their children a fun-filled vacation.
