How I taught my grandmother to read - Sudha Murthy

Image
Inspired by the writer more than the book. She attracts readers through her simplistic language, speaking directly through her books.I love her books. She talks about variety of subjects.Lot of moral lessons that we and the generations to come need to learn.Schools and colleges can only impart knowledge about the respective subjects. This book is a collection of short stories and real experiences by Sudha Murthy, as a school-goer, a college student, a employee, a lecturer ,a wife ,a mom,a philanthropist ,etc. She talks about honesty, simplicity, ingratitude and so on. We as parents need to inculcate good behavior by practicing them ourselves. 'How I taught my grandmother to read ' is a wonderful example of this. The joy of education lies in educating the uneducated(granny) without any pride.I am sure many of us laugh when our granny's want us to read out something.(I am proud that both my parental & maternal grandparents can read English at the age of 85.) Do you still have some childish nature left in you ? Find out for yourself. Here goes the checklist! Eager to catch a glimpse of the small-big airplane up above the world so high ? Jump when you get a chocolate or gems ? Ready to get drenched in a bucket of water and splash all around ? Happy to build sand-castles and get your hands dirty. Want to play on the slide/merry-go-round. Keep licking your fingers after eating a bar chocolate. Enjoy the doodling on your walls and spotting patterns out of it. Excited to watch a cat or a dog and run behind to catch them. Cartoons make you happy :-) Dismantle the building blocks happily in seconds. These are few things I cherish with my kids.I wish my kids remain the same(age) so as to keep my life afresh and active as a child myself. The innocence of childhood smells gr8.Perhaps one of my wishes is to grow young than old.Remaining young at heart is the key to a joyous life :)

Made In China  Sounds familiar ? Ought to be!  As a mother of 2yr old twins, am compelled by my own conscience to buy new toys every other month. So whats there in it ? Every parent of this new age does it.Its not about buying toys that concerns me,but the origin of it. I see that almost 95% of the toys, carry a "Made In China" tag. Be it a small car, soft toy or my computer mouse/keyboard, every 2nd item in my house is China made.Gifts from my relatives abroad, is mostly China/Taiwan/Japan made. Ain't it strange? This made me do some research work on Indian -Chinese Import-Exports.Google is our handy manny :-) (Handy Manny is a cartoon on Disney Channel). Google search on "Made in China" showed me so many websites with an entire range of their products. You could set up a new home, a toy store, electronic goodies and what not.I was even tempted to start a small business. On the reverse, "Made In India" search fetched me the famous pop song by Alisha C...

Birthdays.. Vakul and Vallabh recently celebrated their 2nd birthday. It was party time for kids.It was a small celebration with my apartment friends and kids as invitees.Decorations were as usual, balloons, ribbons and lights.Cake, samosas, chips, juice, lollipops, mini jamuns were the delicacies. Generally, kids enjoy the fun and party. It has become a routine for them. They attend more parties, than I have in my 26 yrs.Birthday parties almost all round the year.In an apartment of 80 flats, there are nearly 30-35 kids. All friends with each other, despite dooos & kaaas.Kids are accustomed to taking gifts and return gifts. There were a group of boys discussing about birthday parties and gifts. There was a kid saying "I have this(gift) already".This struck a chord in my mind.I was a bit disturbed. The first question that arose in my mind was "are we raising responsible kids?" .I feel, our kids have abundance of anything and everything. We don't shun any of the...
